Back to Iraq: Finishing Barika Rising

My second trip to Iraq was nothing short of extraordinary. Returning to the vibrant streets and resilient communities to complete Barika Rising felt like closing a powerful chapter. This time, I focused on capturing the final interviews and visuals that would bring the short film to life — voices that deepen the story, images that pulse with energy and truth.

From night time skate sessions at Suli Skatepark to the heartfelt conversations with the residnets of Barika Refugee Camp, every moment added texture and soul to the film. The warmth, grit, and creativity I encountered were overwhelming — a reminder of why this story matters.

The film had its first screening at the Skateboarding Film Festival Connect in Bordeaux, and the reaction was incredible. Seeing the audience connect with the spirit of Barika and the skaters’ journey was deeply moving. It’s surreal to think how far this project has come.

Now, with fingers crossed, I’m looking ahead to a film festival run. Barika Rising is ready to roll — and I can’t wait to see where it lands next.
